Els Bruinewoud — artist booker at Love for Loud
Ik ben band promoter en regel vrijwel de hele productie omtrent een concert. Dus van het boeken van een band tot de avond zelf en de bands overnachten ook bij mij, inclusief ontbijt. Ik vind het enorm gezellig, sowieso komt het hoogstens twee keer per week voor, dus ruimte zat nog voor mijzelf. En ik voel me enorm thuis bij creatieve, serieuze muzikanten, omdat ik zelf ook zo in elkaar steek. Creatief, maar niet losgeslagen. Wil je het goed doen, dan heb je zeker je hersens erbij nodig.
Dit werk is heel afwisselend: ik maak zelf de posters, bereid eten voor de bands en vrijwilligers, sta bij de entree en heet de gasten welkom, soms een beetje bardienst, licht of geluid en natuurlijk ook veel gezelligheid na de show.
I am a band promoter and I organize virtually the entire production of a concert. This includes booking the band, organizing the evening itself, and providing accommodation for the bands, including breakfast. I find it very enjoyable, and it only happens twice a week at most, so I still have plenty of time for myself. I feel very much at home with creative, serious musicians, because that’s how I am myself. Creative, but not wild. If you want to do it well, you definitely need to use your common sense.
This work is very varied: I create the posters myself, prepare food for the bands and volunteers, am the venue’s host at the entrance welcoming the guests, sometimes I do a bit of bar work, lighting or sound, and of course there’s a lot of fun after the show.

Dit werk doe ik pas twee en een half jaar, maar ik ben er full on ingegaan en nogal een doorzetter, dus al aardig op weg met supertoffe bands. Wie de eerste band was die ik boekte weet ik niet precies, wel de eerste die mij echt bijgebleven is, dat was Sasquatch (www.sasquatchrock.us). In Rock Club the Cave, gelijk ook uitverkocht, echt een legendarische avond!
Hiervoor heb ik allerlei werkzaamheden uitgeprobeerd: ik heb jaren een passagiersschip gehad en gerund in Frankrijk en ben daarmee gestopt omdat ik mijn creativiteit niet meer kwijt kon in dat werk en omdat ik me ook best alleen voelde in Frankrijk met alle verantwoordelijkheden. Daarna had ik een mobiele tweedehandskledingboetiek, maakte kleding en kunst. Terug in Nederland ben ik begonnen met het organiseren van concerten, omdat ik bepaalde muziekstromingen miste in Amsterdam en graag wil dat deze voor mensen betaalbaar zijn en dat de muzikanten goed worden verzorgd.
I’ve only been doing this job for two and a half years, but I’ve thrown myself into it wholeheartedly and I’m quite determined, so I’m already well on my way with some really cool bands. I don’t remember exactly who the first band I booked was, but I do remember the first one that really stuck with me: Sasquatch (www.sasquatchrock.us). They played at Rock Club the Cave, which sold out immediately. It was a truly legendary evening!
Before that, I tried all kinds of things: I owned and ran a passenger ship in France for years, but I quit because I couldn’t express my creativity in that work and because I felt quite lonely in France with all the responsibilities. After that, I had a mobile second-hand clothing boutique and created clothes and art. Back in The Netherlands, I started organizing concerts because I missed certain music genres in Amsterdam and wanted to make them affordable for people and ensure that the musicians are well taken care of.
Mijn dagen zijn wel altijd te kort, Love for Loud is echt een fulltime job geworden, maar ik zorg goed voor mezelf. Elke dag ga ik sporten in de natuur. En verder natuurlijk graag met vriendinnen op pad, een expositie bezoeken enzovoort.
Iggy is mijn papegaai, die ik al bijna drieëntwintig jaar heb. Ik ben echt aan hem gehecht. Ik neem hem elke dag mee met sporten op de fiets of naar de winkel. Thuis is hij ook vaak los, maar natuurlijk doe ik ook veel zonder hem.
My days are always too short. Love for Loud has really become a full-time job, but I take good care of myself. Every day I exercise outdoors. And of course I enjoy going out with friends, visiting exhibitions, and so on.
Iggy is my parrot, who I’ve had for almost twenty-three years. I’m really attached to him. I take him with me every day when I go cycling or shopping. At home, he’s often out of his cage, but of course I also do a lot without him.

Naar welke muziek ik luister? Ik boek natuurlijk mijn eigen favoriete bands, dus die staan altijd op. Wat dat betreft geldt voor mij: the sky is the limit. Als ik gave muziek hoor, dan ga ik op zoek naar mogelijkheden om deze band te boeken. Mijn wishlist groeit, daar komt natuurlijk steeds wat bij en mijn smaak ontwikkelt zich ook, het is geen stilstaand gebeuren. Op dit moment ben ik bezig met New Candys (www.newcandys.com) en Mephistofeles (www.mephistofeles.bandcamp.com). Ik zou wel graag Wand (www.wand.band) willen boeken, die heb ik al eens benaderd, maar zij touren voorlopig nog niet in Europa. Ook John Garcia (www.label.napalmrecords.com/john-garcia) zou ik willen boeken, maar dat schijnt bijna onmogelijk te zijn — ik heb al eens een poging of twee eraan gegeven, maar tot nu toe zonder succes.
Er zijn ook bands die mijn aanbod om te komen spelen nog niet hebben gehonoreerd, maar dat komt omdat ik uit financieel oogpunt alleen bands kan boeken die al in Europa touren. Ik kan geen vliegticket betalen voor bands. Hazemaze (www.hazemazeband.bandcamp.com) is een band die ik heel graag had willen boeken, maar die niet meer actief is.
Fijn hoor, die laatste vraag. Maar oké, als ik de keuze moest maken tussen doof zijn of blind zijn, zou ik uiteindelijk kiezen voor doof, maar blijft een onmogelijke vraag verder.

What music do I listen to? I book my own favorite bands, of course, so they’re always on my sound system. In that regard, the sky’s the limit for me. When I hear music that I like, I look for opportunities to book that band. My wish list is growing, with new additions all the time, and my taste is evolving too, so it’s not a static thing. At the moment, I’m into New Candys (www.newcandys.com) and Mephistofeles (www.mephistofeles.bandcamp.com). I would really like to book Wand (www.wand.band). I’ve already approached them, but they’re not touring Europe for the time being. I’d also like to book John Garcia (www.label.napalmrecords.com/john-garcia), but that seems almost impossible — I’ve tried once or twice, but so far without success.
There are also bands that haven’t responded to my offer to come and play, but that’s because, for financial reasons, I can only book bands that are already touring Europe. I can’t afford plane tickets for bands. Hazemaze (www.hazemazeband.bandcamp.com) is a band I would have loved to book, but they’re no longer active.
That’s some final question you're asking! But okay, if I had to choose between being deaf or blind, I would ultimately choose deaf, but it remains an impossible question.
